How can I afford a gap year?

One option is to work for the first part and use the money you make to support whatever you want to do in the second part. Another way is to look for scholarships that can help you get abroad. Always look for the best deals on flights by flying during non-peak seasons and staying in hostels instead of hotels, with friends, or use sites like AirBnB to find cheap accommodations.
